Can A Bodybuilder Be A Martial Artist?
From Diana Davila
Some readers may wonder why a martial arts site would write a feature about a bodybuilder. For years I have heard comments along the lines of "A bodybuilder isn't a real martial artist, they can't fight." and "Bodybuilders are too stiff/slow". Anyone who makes comments like these obviously has never heard of Flex Wheeler.
This champion has many times described himself as a martial artist first, bodybuilder second. He still claims martial arts as his passion after training for many years. I can only hope those of us who are training now can retain the passion for the arts that this man has.
Training During the Golden Era
Flex came up in the so called "golden era" of the martial arts in America. He competed during the era of Billy Blanks, Keith Vitali, Bill Wallace and all the other greats we know and love.
His instructor was a member of the legendary Budweiser National Karate Team. If you can name one legendary karate man of the late 70s or 80s, then chances are Flex knew him.
Flex started his martial arts career around the same time he started his bodybuilding career. As fate would have it, bodybuilding took off for him, forcing him to sideline his martial arts career. However, after a long and successful career, and overcoming some serious health issues, Flex is right back in the middle of martial arts training again. He recently competed in a match at the Arnold Classic's martial arts tournament in Columbus, Ohio against Richie Everage, another karate name that has been around for a while. Richie used to be a member of the famous Firefighters team in the early 90s. The fact that makes this match stand out from the many others that day is the fact that Flex is a man who can excel in two completely different arenas and come out on top. How many of us can say that?
Current Projects
Currently Flex is pursuing a movie career and is also in the early stages of possibly promoting a truly competitor friendly tournament. His goal is to raise awareness of the sport and better reward the fighters of today. He also has launched a new project that no one would have expected - Flex Wheeler Choppers. I wish him all the luck in the world. And for those who still talk down about bodybuilders and doubt their abilities, I say take a look at Flex. He proves that you can't stereotype anyone. A true athlete can accomplish anything if he or she works hard enough.

Entrenamiento Durante La Era De Oro
